We started to cut all the bramble bushes down. Strimmer with a heavy duty blade was great help.
Clearing
Unfortunately, we ended up digging out all the roots. More bags, more dragging, but our quad bike was great help.
Spring
After just two years we finished the front part of the old croft house and cannot wait for spring to get ready planting.
Vegetable beds
This area, was overgrown. We started to clear in burning weeds and bits of pruning trees.
Little vegetable garden
We prepared the vegetable beds for spring seeds.
The vegetable beds
Everything is getting ready for spring. We prepared the pathway with drainage sheets and bark.
Pathway
Unfortunately we had to dig trenches to lay down drainage pipes, because our beds could not cope with the wet weather.
Drainage
We decided to build new raised vegetable beds.
New beds
All set for the summer and hopefully loads of vegetables.
Current Eden Garden
We used pallets to build our big compost area.
Pallets
Our compost area has 3 sections now and is working very well.
Compost
There is actually no need to cover the inside of the walls. However it does help to keep the heat, for speeding up the compost process.
Cover
With 4 acres of land we have plenty to do over the seasons. When we moved in, it was winter and we had to wait for spring before we could plant anything. It was apparent that lots of work would be needed and it would be easy to become overwhelmed when faced with it all.
However, we looked at what we had and what we don't need. What we saw was brambles, lots of brambles. The whole area in front of the old croft house was over grown with impenetrable, chest high brambles. It seemed as good a place to start as anywhere, being contained, at one extreme of our land and somewhere we could see instant results and improvements.
Close to our house was a small overgrown vegetable plot, our Eden Garden. It was mostly a lot of weeds and some overgrown trees. Bit by bit, we have replaced the beds and pruned back the trees. Its not fully finished yet, but already had some success with vegetables, fruit and herbs.
Fencing is definitely needed on our land with livestock. Something we never did before.
Fencing
Measuring, getting the right fence posts and a lot of Postcrete for the gate.
